Rachel Apa’s Death Highlights a Rhabdomyolysis Warning Sign Runners May Miss

Updated 17:11 3 Nov 2026 GMTPublished 16:53 3 Nov 2026 GMTRachel Apa died after collapsing in the 24th mile of the New York City marathonAn otherwise healthy woman died of a rare injury which leads to the muscles breaking down from excessive exercise.Rachel Apa had been participating in the New York City marathon on November 1 when she collapsed in Central Park while at the marathon's 24th mile.Tragically, despite the efforts of medics, including a hospital worker watching the marathon who had rushed to administer CPR, Rachel died in hospital at around 9.40 p.m., with her father Steve Apa calling the loss 'unfathomable', and saying that she was in 'perfect health and perfect shape'. Mr. Apa has since said that his daughter died from a condition called rhabdomyolysis. This is a rare muscular condition where muscles start breaking down, and is life-threatening.AdvertWhile rare, the condition can happen following too much exercise without taking proper breaks.Cleveland Clinic has laid out some of the symptoms of the condition, which include muscle which are swollen, weak, or tender and sore that someone may noticed up to three days after the condition starts.Over 60,000 people finished the New York City marathon this year (Paul Seibert/Back Left Media/New York Road Runners via Getty Images)Of course, it's completely normal to feel sore or tender after exercise and people might reasonably assume that these symptoms are just the result of that rather than a potentially lethal health condition, however one other symptom can help to differentiate it from regular soreness after exercise. This is noticing that when you urinate your pee is very dark, including being red, brown, or the color of tea.You may also have dehydration, nausea, losing consciousness, and noticing that you are peeing less than usual.Your muscles breaking down can result in several chemicals leaking into your body when they would normally be contained within your muscles. These include potassium, phosphate, myoglobin, creatine kinase, and urate.Your kidneys remove these substances from your body, but excessive quantities of them can start to put additional stress on your kidneys, as well as leading to the changes in urine. In severe cases the condition can even lead to kidney failure, which can be fatal.Cleveland Clinic advises to contact a doctor 'if you notice symptoms like weak and sore muscles and color changes in your pee'.People took to the streets of New York for the marathon (Paul Seibert/Back Left Media/New York Road Runners via Getty Images)Rhabdomyolysis is not a hereditary condition, but there are things which can increase someone's risk factor for it.These include people who are endurance athletes, such marathon runners, spin classes, or other endurance sports. While practising these sometimes does not cause the condition, if someone pushes themselves too hard without properly resting then this can be a danger.Other risk factors include physically demanding jobs in a hot environment such as foundries, firefighting, or kitchens as overheating increases the risk of rhabdomyolysis, as well as boot camps, including in the military, as well as being over 65 years old.Rachel had been running in the New York City marathon to raise money for Parkinson’s Foundation’s Champions team, and had been doing so in her grandfather's memory after he died four years ago. This was the first time that she had run a marathon, and she was contacting her parents by text message while she was running to check in.She had messaged her mom Michelle Apa at several points, saying 'Ow.' at mile 14, and 'Ow, Ow.' at mile 19, but when her dad sent her an encouraging text at mile 23 for the 'final stretch', she did not reply.Rachel was a student at Charleston Southern University, and is the first death from a medical problem at the New York City Marathon since 2024.Featured Image Credit: InstagramTopics: US News, Health, New York

Jeffrey Gregory’s Final Prayer Draws Heartbreaking Tribute From His Church New

Jeffrey Gregory’s Final Prayer Draws Heartbreaking Tribute From His Church

Updated 16:59 3 Nov 2026 GMTPublished 15:35 3 Nov 2026 GMTA pal of Jeffrey Gregory, 55, has told how he 'truly loved and poured his life' into flyingThe pilot at the helm of the private plane that crashed in Florida has been remembered as a 'dependable' family man by those close to him.Jeffrey Gregory, 55, was killed alongside eight others after the Learjet 60 he was captaining nose-dived into a street in Palm Beach County on Sunday (1 November) and exploded into a fireball.Further details about the victims who perished in the aviation tragedy have been emerging since they were identified yesterday and tributes continue to flood in for the passengers and crew who passed away.Tech tycoon Adam Robinson died alongside his wife Helen Sharp, and their two young children Emma, four, and Charlie, two, when the jet that was bound for the Bahamas ran into difficulty.AdvertThe children's nanny Anita Maria Cetina and another couple, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, also lost their lives, as did two crew members - Gregory and his 20-year-old co-pilot, Nathalia Filgueiras.Gregory perished in the tragedy that stunned Florida on Sunday (Facebook)An audio recording captured Filgueiras' frantic final moments in the cockpit, as she was heard telling an air traffic controller: "We're going to crash into the ground...Holy f**k, we're out of time."The Learjet rapidly lost altitude after it's crew had complained of ice and turbulence, before a mayday call was issued.Tom Chapman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said that the volatile weather conditions are a 'major focus of the investigation', while investigators are also probing whether 'there was some breakup of the aircraft before impact'.A church attended by the pilot of the plane, Gregory, has now issued a tribute to the married father-of-three. He is survived by his wife Cheryl, 53, and their adult children. He was piloting the plane alongside Nathalia Filgueiras (Aki Kuusisto via AP)The Limerick Chapel in Pennsylvania sent an email to its worshippers confirming that Gregory was among the victims of the plane crash.According to the New York Post, it explained that the pilot was heard 'reciting the Lord's Prayer' in his last moments, while saying he had now gone 'home to be with the Lord'.A lifelong friend and former neighbour of Gregory also spoke to The US Sun about the heartbreaking loss.David Peters explained he had gone to school with the late pilot, lived next to him and later worked alongside him. He said they had both grown up attending the Limerick Chapel and that their parents previously worked there.Describing his pal as 'very diligent and dependable', he told how Gregory had dreamt of becoming a pilot since he was a child - and 'loved wearing his leather bomber jacket'.Gregory 'truly loved and poured his life into' flying"I know he worked hard to become a pilot and it was something he truly loved and poured his life and heart into," Peters told the publication.LADbible has contacted the Limerick Chapel for further comment.Gregory's co-pilot Filgueiras handled communications with air traffic control as the private jet began losing altitude at a significant pace. Prior to her death, she had shared footage from inside the cockpit of the Learjet online.NASA administrator Jared Isaacman - who the space agency describes as a 'skilled pilot' who has had more than 8,000 hours in the air - shared a lengthy social media post defending the 20-year-old on Monday. The billionaire, 43, said he felt 'compelled' to chime in on the conversation surrounding the Learjet crash after seeing a host of people 'critiquing this poor woman’s final radio calls'.Gregory's 20-year-old co-pilot was heard communicating with air traffic control (Threads/@itsnatfilg)Describing the criticism of Filgueiras as 'troubling', he wrote: "She was the second-in-command (SIC), and while she was empowered to point out mistakes as part of good crew resource management, she was doing her job, communicating with ATC right to the end in a terrifying situation. She likely knew before many of those calls that she was going to die."I have heard final calls from friends, from military pilots with thousands of hours in fighter aircraft, and they are just as heartbreaking because they know the end is approaching."Isaacman urged people to let investigators do their jobs rather than jumping to conclusions, while offering his sympathies to the victims families.Featured Image Credit: FacebookTopics: US News, Religion, Travel

Brad Pitt’s Daughter Vivienne Draws Attention After Her Legal Name Change

Updated 11:39 3 Nov 2026 GMTPublished 11:38 3 Nov 2026 GMTVivienne, 18, explained her reasons in a petition to legally drop her dad's last nameA California judge has approved Vivienne’s petition to drop her father's last name.Following the hearing on 2 November, the 18-year-old now goes by ‘Vivienne Marcheline Jolie’ officially, rather than ‘Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt’.As reported by Page Six, Judge Virginia Keeny told the Los Angeles Superior Court: “There being no objections, the petition for change of name is granted.”“The Decree is signed and filed,” the order adds. “The Petitioner’s name is changed from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.”AdvertVivienne joins Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh who have taken only their mother’s surname.Brad Pitt, 62, and Angelina Jolie, 51, share six children: Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 18.In the petition filed in July, Vivienne lists the reason for the name change as ‘personal’, according to a court document obtained by Page Six.Four out of their six children have taken only their mum's name (VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty Images)“I have six very individual human beings in my home. I am so excited about all the different stages and feelings and curiosities that they go through. Why wouldn’t you be?” Jolie told PEOPLE in 2021.“We’re supposed to help them figure out who they are. And you can’t figure out who they are if you don’t enthusiastically develop with them.”Just two years after tying the knot with Pitt, Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, alleging that the F1 actor was abusive towards one of their kids during a private flight.Three years on, the pair were officially divorced but their assets and child custody were still being decided.Vivienne stated that the reasons are 'personal' (Raymond Hall/GC Images)It took until 2024 for both parties to finally reach a settlement. One of the reasons why it took so long is because shortly after Jolie's divorce filing in 2016, Pitt was investigated by the The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) over allegations of abuse. Both organisations dropped their investigations and didn't file any charges. However, the former couple are still locked in an active legal battle over the French winery Château Miraval.Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married for two years (MJ Kim/Getty Images)Pitt sued Jolie in 2022 after she sold her 50% share of the $164 million estate to Tenute del Mondo (the wine division of the Stoli Group, owned by Yuri Shefler) without his consent, claiming it violated a prior agreement.Jolie countersued, alleging Pitt waged a vindictive campaign against her following their 2016 split.A California court and appeals court have issued a series of rulings favoring Pitt, including ordering depositions from Stoli Group and Tenute del Mondo executives and reviving claims against Shefler in California.Pitt's legal team has been pushing to examine Jolie's financial and tax records dating back to 2017, which her lawyers have opposed as an invasion of privacy. The broader litigation involving the winery and the third-party buyers continues to move forward toward trial.Featured Image Credit: ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty ImagesTopics: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Celebrity

We had a daughter, her husband and two grandchildren on the plane."AdvertRobinson's father confirmed that his son had died in the plane crash but said that authorities had not formally notified him of the death.Adam Robinson and his family have been identified by their loved ones as some of the passengers on board the private plane that crashed (YouTube/Adam Robinson)Another person on board the plane who has been identified by her family was 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, whose stepfather said she'd texted her boyfriend about the weather conditions just minutes before the plane crashed. He told the New York Post that she'd sent a message saying 'I’ve got turbulence, I’ve got ice' around 10 minutes before the aircraft hit the ground. The private plane, a Learjet 60, had contacted air traffic control in the minutes before the crash they'd said they had manageable light ice and some turbulence. They were then told that the plane was in 'overspeed condition' and quickly losing altitude, the last thing controllers on the ground heard before the audio cut out was a woman's voice shouting 'look outside, we're out of time'.In the span of around 90 seconds before contact was lost the plane over 20,000 feet, and the sudden drop had come only a matter of seconds after the plane had said they were 'picking up precipitation' and asked to gain altitude.Officials have said they are investigating the crash, including how much of a factor weather conditions played.Co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras has also been identified by her family (Threads/@itsnatfilg)Tom Chapman of the NTSB explained that the plane's crew told them the temperature outside the aircraft was -47C which they felt they could manage and they were in 'moderate turbulence'.He said: "Our investigators will work to thoroughly document relevant evidence and gather additional factual information," he told the press conference."Our mission is to understand not just what happened but what happened and to recommend changes to prevent it from happening again."We will not be determining the probable cause of the crash while we’re here on scene nor will we speculate about the cause."Justin Crabbe, commercial pilot CEO at Jettly, told LADbible that ice on the wings of a plane can significantly affect how an aircraft flies and how turbulence can also impact an aircraft. He explained that it 'changes the shape of the wings, reduces lift, increases drag and can make the aircraft much more difficult to control', and could possibly have made a turbulent situation worse.LADbible Group have contacted Adam Robinson's company for comment.Featured Image Credit: YouTube/Adam RobinsonTopics: US News

Published 17:38 2 Nov 2026 GMTThe expert believes the plane may have suffered from an icing issueAn aviation attorney has explained why there was 'no visible evidence' after a private aircraft crashed into a Florida neighborhood on Sunday (November 1).The Learjet plane had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it ran into difficulties. The pilot spoke of turbulence while the jet was traveling eastbound at 35,000 feet, before requesting to climb 2,000 feet higher.Just moments later, the aircraft suffered a quick descent and plunged 35,000 feet in just over a minute.AdvertAccording to LiveATC.net, The pilot's last words to controllers were: "We're going to crash into the ground."The plane came down in Greenacres at approximately 12:50pm EST, with all nine onboard killed. The plane plunged 35,000 feet in just over a minute (Saul Martinez/Getty Images)Zachary Gorwitz, a Miami-based aviation attorney, told the Miami Herald that he believes the plane may have suffered from an icing issue, which is when ice particles build up on key pieces of the plane.Gorwitz claims the icing could have impacted the horizontal stabilizer, located at the back of the aircraft to prevent the plane from tipping too far up or down.A build-up of ice crystals in the sensor of the stabilizer could lead to a crash similar to what was seen in Florida over the weekend, according to the expert.Because the plane was nosediving at 600mph, Gorwitz explained that "it’s really not surprising that there wouldn’t be a lot of surface debris because of the incredible force of the impact."The National Transportation Safety Board said it has initiated a ‘go-team’ to arrive at the scene on Sunday night and Monday (November 2) morning, with an investigation into the fatal crash ongoing. The nine people onboard have died (Saul Martinez/Getty Images)In a statement provided to UNILAD, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said: "A Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area near Cresthaven, Florida, around 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, November 1. Nine people were on board.“The aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.“The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB is in charge of the investigation and will provide all updates.”The co-pilot of the LearJet plane has since been identified as 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha, as per the New York Post.Nathalia featured in local media in 2023 after receiving her pilot's license at 17, which happened before she even passed her driving test. She had dreamed of becoming a commercial pilot one day.Featured Image Credit: Saul Martinez/Getty ImagesTopics: US News, Travel

Nathalia Filgueiras’ Aviation Journey Draws Attention After Fatal Florida Crash

Nathalia Filgueiras’ Aviation Journey Draws Attention After Fatal Florida Crash

Updated 15:49 2 Nov 2026 GMTPublished 14:45 2 Nov 2026 GMTThe business aircraft nosedived into a neighbourhood in Palm Beach County and exploded, killing all six on boardA young woman who was understood to have been the co-pilot on the private jet that plummeted to the ground in Florida has now been identified. She has been named as Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, who was just 20 years old, and had got her pilot license while still in high school. She was one of six who were confirmed to have died when the Learjet 60 aircraft suddenly nosedived to the ground before erupting into a ball of flames.Nathalia was previously interviewed by CBS12 News aged just 17 after obtaining her private pilot’s license in 2023, before she even had her driving license.Advert“I definitely do brag because people say, ‘oh you can’t drive,' and I’m like, 'yeah but I can fly,’” she said at the time.Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras shared selfies in the cockpit on social media (itsnatfilg/Threads)In pictures posted on social media, Nathalia had shared snaps of her in the cockpit of jets, including one post on Threads where she wrote: "LearJet60!!!!! ALL GLORY TO GOD! AMEM!"The Learjet60 business jet involved had nosedived into a neighbourhood in Palm Beach County and exploded, narrowly missing nearby homes and businesses.Transportation secretary Sean Duffy posted on X on Sunday (1 November) that the Learjet 60 crashed at 12.50pm local time close to Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, calling it a 'horrific tragedy'.The jet was travelling from Austin, Texas, and was bound for the Bahamas when tragedy struck.Young aviator Nathalia previously told the media she began pilot lessons in 2020, but was also taught by her dad, who learned flying some years prior."I think it’s cool," she said. "Some people think that it’s weird that I can fly planes, but I can’t drive a car, I mean I can but, a lot of people think it’s funny."Most of the posts on her online Threads account showed selfies and photos of her beside jets and sharing her passion for flying.Nathalia has been identified as one of the co-pilots (@itsnatfilg/Threads)Investigations into cause ongoingThe cause of the crash was not immediately clear, but federal investigators are expected to provide an update on Monday. It was suspected that 'sPilots and aviation experts have told LADbible that 'severe icing' and weather conditions could have caused the plane to plummet and explained exactly how it happens.Palm Beach County authorities evacuated about 600 people from a nearby mobile home community while the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigate the crash.Police at the scene of the crash (Saul Martinez/Getty Images)According to flight tracking services, the plane was heading east at 35,000 feet when the pilot started to report problems. The pilot said ice was accumulating on the jet and that turbulence was jolting it by as much as 700 feet (213 meters), according to air traffic control recordings shared online.“We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence,” the pilot told controllers before the situation deteriorated. The pilot requested permission to climb another 2,000 feet then quickly declared an emergency as the jet lost altitude at an alarming rate.“We’re descending 8,000 — mayday, mayday — we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” the pilot radioed.“We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute,” the pilot radioed, before delivering a devastating acknowledgment of what was about to happen: “We’re going to crash into the ground.”Florida governor Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of anyone on the ground injured or killed.Governor Ron DeSantis talks to the media (Saul Martinez/Getty Images)Authorities have not released the names of the people who died.“It was a cataclysmic plane crash,” he told reporters at the scene. “It looked like a missile going down and left a big crater on the side of the road.”Video recorded by passers-by captured the terrifying moment the aircraft plunged from the sky before slamming into the ground and exploding. The plane erupted into flames (X)Flames flickered around chunks of pavement lining the crater as shocked residents looked on in horror. Thick black smoke engulfed the crash site.Featured Image Credit: itsnatfilg/ThreadsTopics: US News, World News

Why the West Palm Beach Jet Crash Left Almost No Wreckage

Why the West Palm Beach Jet Crash Left Almost No Wreckage

Updated 12:48 2 Nov 2026 GMTPublished 12:41 2 Nov 2026 GMTAll nine people on board the aircraft have since been confirmed deceased Warning: This article contains content which some readers may find distressingLast night (1 November), footage emerged of a Learjet 60 smashing into the ground on a road in West Palm Beach, Florida, before exploding into a frightening fireball. All nine passengers and crew onboard the aircraft have been confirmed deceased, following an announcement from US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The identities of those onboard have not been publicly released. The US Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating the cause of the incident, as numerous theories about what could've contributed to the crash circulate online.AdvertQuestions have also been raised about the lack of recognisable wreckage at the crash site, with several aviation experts now explaining that this is due to the speed at which the jet collided with the ground. The aircraft had been travelling from Austin, Texas, bound to the Bahamas (Saul Martinez/Getty Images)According to released cockpit audio, the jet had been descending at 20,000ft a minute and most likely slammed into the ground at a speed of around 340 mph, meaning that the aircraft would've shattered upon impact."The energy transfer breaks apart the aircraft fuselage," DeWitt Ingram, a Learjet type-rated captain and founder and president of Par-Avion Group Aviation Consulting, told local outlet CBS 12 News, adding that the only remaining parts of the plane will likely be the landing gear or engine components.Meanwhile, aviation attorney Zachary Gorwitz gave a similar analysis to the Miami Herald, saying that the 'incredible force of the impact' meant the lack of debris was 'really not surprising'.The frightening crash was captured on dashcam footage (X)Cockpit audio releasedAudio from the plane's cockpit was shared online moments after the crash, with a female crew member heard issuing a mayday call to Air Traffic Control. We're descending 8,000. Mayday, mayday! We're descending 10,000 feet per minute. Declaring emergency 722 Bravo Delta. We are in an overspeed condition, descending 20,000 feet per minute," the crew member can be heard saying. "We're going to crash into the ground."We are descending 22,000 feet, and we are banking 60 degrees... Look outside. Holy f**k, we're out of time."(LADbible/FlightRadar/Saul Martinez/Getty Images)Weather may have played a role in plane crashThe crew member had also mentioned the presence of 'severe icing' during the plane's final moments, leading people to speculate whether or not this had caused the fatal crash."When an aircraft flies through clouds containing supercooled water droplets, those droplets can freeze on contact with the aircraft," Justin Crabbe, commercial pilot CEO at Jettly, a global private aviation broker platform, told LADbible."Even a relatively small amount of ice can significantly affect how an aircraft flies and how turbulence can also impact an aircraft."Severe icing means ice is accumulating at a rate that the aircraft's anti-icing or de-icing systems may not be able to adequately manage."Ice changes the shape of the wings, reduces lift, increases drag and can make the aircraft much more difficult to control."Featured Image Credit: XTopics: US News, Travel
