George Clooney’s Heartfelt Words About Presley Gerber Draw Attention

Published 11:45 10 Oct 2026 GMT+1George Clooney says Presley Gerber's death is 'one of the most devastating things that’s happened to our family'The actor made the heartfelt comments during a recent red carpet appearance alongside his wifeGeorge Clooney has opened up about the 'devastating' death of Presley Gerber. The award-winning actor is a longtime friend of the Gerber family as well as a business partner of Rande Gerber, so the news of the 27-year-old's death will have understandably hit close to home for the 65-year-old. Responding to a question about Presley's death during an appearance at Albies in London on Friday evening, Clooney explained that he hadn't even begun to think of a way to honour his legacy as the incident was too painful. "I don't even think we're in the position of being able to talk about it quite honestly," Clooney told Entertainment Tonight. Advert"It’s one of the most devastating things that’s happened to our family."And their family is just...as you can imagine."George Clooney with Presley's parents, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber (Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for Netflix)"It's the worst thing that could ever happen to the family."Clooney's friendship with Gerber dates back to the 1990s, with the pair later going into business to create the premium tequila brand Casamigos in 2013, meaning that he'll have known Presley and his younger sister Kaia for their entire lives. What happened to Presley Gerber? Presley passed away last month (20 September), with the youngster reportedly having died while staying at a sober living facility in Los Angeles. His death was confirmed to TMZ by a representative for the Gerber family, who gave the following statement: "The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time."It has since been reported that Presley had died from a 'suspected overdose' while staying at the Santa Monica facility. Audio from the 911 call was later made public by Page Six, in which the words 'cardiac arrest' and 'overdose' were used. Santa Monica Police Department later confirmed they were investigating the death as a suspected overdose, adding there was no indication of foul play. The 27-year-old passed away last month (Monica Schipper/WireImage)An official cause of death has not been released, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s report suggesting that it could take several months before a cause of death is determined. Presley had spoken openly about his struggles with mental health over the years, previously telling Studio 22 podcast in 2023 that he wanted to support people in a similar situation to him."Having struggled with mental health, depression and some other things that come along with that, I think that whether I help one person or a hundred people get out of that place that I was in at one point in my life, that’s all I need to do," he said."[Mental health] is an issue. It is such a big part of my life. It’s a 24/7 job, and there’s so much to it."That’s really what I want to do: help people, whether you’re depressed, you’re struggling with something that is having a negative effect on your body. I mean it could be anything, and there’s no judgment."Featured Image Credit: (Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)Topics: Celebrity News, George Clooney

ChatGPT’s Wealth Advice Left Passive Income Expert JL Collins Stunned

ChatGPT’s Wealth Advice Left Passive Income Expert JL Collins Stunned

Updated 19:29 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 16:24 18 Jan 2026 GMTChatGPT was asked by Diary of a CEO's Steven Bartlett what a 'normal person who earns $50,000 a year' should do to become 'financially free'Using ChatGPT for things that seem wildly out of its realm is normal, like asking it about ways to get rich. But there is a chance it could start acting as a personal financial advisor would, and the implications of that are shocking. While I tend to ask my AI things to scare myself into a health anxiety attack, Steven Bartlett is more future orientated. Because when he sat down with passive income expert JL Collins on his The Diary Of A CEO podcast to discuss the 'biggest lies of investing', he wanted to compare something. The American author - whose book The Simple Path to Wealth, reveals the power of small savings and investing in the stock market to gradually build wealth – has seen much success. AdvertBut to figure out if Collins’ advice was one-of-a-kind, Bartlett thought to ask ChatGPT what 'a normal person' needs to do to become 'financially free', and the answer was similar. Passive income expert JL Collins was stunned by ChatGPT's advice (YouTube/The Diary Of A CEO)Bartlett wrote for his prompt: "I'm a normal person who earns $50,000 a year. I want to be financially free in the future. "Give me a one-sentence answer based on all of the wisdom in the world taken from every expert in investing ever." He first asked Collins what his advice would be, to which he replied: "Avoid debt. Live on less than you earn, and invest in surplus."Bartlett then said that ChatGPT responded with the following advice: "Focus on saving and consistently invest in low cost broad based index funds like the S&P 500 while living below your means and allowing compounding to work over time."He then asked a 'very broad' follow-up question, which was: "How do I earn more?""Develop your skills," Collins responded, before the Dragons' Den star added: "It said, to earn more, focus on developing high-demand skills.ChatGPT knows it all, apparently (Getty Stock Images)"Seek opportunities for career advancement, explore side households, or invest in assets that generate passive income like real estate or dividends."As for what 'high-demand skills' could mean in the future with AI, Collins said that programming used to be a very sought-after skill, but, based on 'what he understands in the age of AI', that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. He also joked that the AI chatbot had seemingly 'mined his book'.It comes after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that job displacement is what worries him most."I'm confident that a lot of current customer support that happens over a phone or computer, those people will lose their jobs, and that'll be better done by an AI," he said on The Tucker Carlson Show."Someone told me recently that the historical average is about 50 per cent of jobs significantly change."Maybe they don't totally go away, but significantly change every 75 years on average."My controversial take would be that this is going to be like a punctuated equilibria moment where a lot of that will happen in a short period of time," he said."But if we zoom out, it's not going to be dramatically different than the historical rate."Featured Image Credit: Getty Stock ImagesTopics: AI, Artificial Intelligence, ChatGPT, Technology

Trump sparks reactions with awkward mom joke during Texas rally

Trump sparks reactions with awkward mom joke during Texas rally

Published 19:40 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Trump used his speech to explain how Melania had to teach him how to pronounce the word 'vegan', and also criticise a protestor's appearancePresident Donald Trump resorted to classic mom joke after protesters attempted to derail his rally speech. The 80-year-old returned to the campaign trail at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday (October 7) to endorse Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton ahead of the looming midterms.In-fact, he has actually visited the predominantly red state three times in less than a month in an attempt to stave off recent Democratic victories. However, the rally was interrupted when a group of demonstrators began causing a scene inside the auditorium - when at least half a dozen people began heckling the president before being escorted away by cops.AdvertOne protester was reportedly physically assaulted by an older Trump supporter as he tried to leave the arena, while a larger crowd of demonstrators gathered outside the venue holding signs which read 'ICE out of San Antonio'.Other signs held by the crowd outside read 'Trump is the WORST President EVER', and could also be heard chanting: "Donald Trump, go back home, San Antonio is ours alone."President Donald Trump, who of course is famous for his toned physique, called one of the protestors at the rally 'fat' (Win McNamee/Getty Images)Anyway, despite the chaos unfolding in the crowd, Trump seemed unfazed as he joked: "Is there anything like a Trump rally?"Before claiming one heckler was 'going back home to mum'."Because what he doesn’t know is that his mum voted for Trump," he added. It didn't stop there, as Trump - who is famously not in the best shape himself even if he tells us he is - then took a jab at the protester's appearance as they were removed from the venue."That guy’s got to lose a lot of weight," Trump told the crowd. "You know, I never really talk about looks of a person, but those are really bad looking people, you have to say."Following the incident, Trump claimed that 'many of these protesters are paid by enemies of our nation', but urged his supporters not to worry about it as the disruption inside the arena finally came to an end.But just before it did, he asked the crowd: "If there are any more paid protesters, please raise your hand and get the hell out of here."Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is currently leading the Texas Senate race (Brandon Bell/Getty Images)As the rally went on, Trump went on to mock Paxton's opponent, Democratic state representative James Talarico, as he alleged that Talarico follows a strict vegan diet - a claim the Democrat has consistently denied. But before he did so he mocked himself as he explained how his wife Melania - who he said calls him 'sir' - told him that he was pronouncing the word 'vegan' wrong."You know, my wife told me 'sir, you have to do me a favour - it’s not vay-gan, it’s vee-gan'," he explained.Referring to Talarico, whom he repeatedly called 'Tala-freako,' the president continued: "Now he says he loves meat, but he’s a vegan - see, Melania? I got that right."He’s sick because he’s been forced to eat meat for political reasons and he’s throwing up all over the place."He’s a vegan. He wants to eat a piece of lettuce, a little piece of lettuce, please."That is the president of the United States everyone!Anyway, the rant follows Talarico’s insistence at the Texas Humane Legislation Network that reducing meat consumption was 'existential' in the fight against climate change.Featured Image Credit: Win McNamee/Getty ImagesTopics: Donald Trump, Texas, News

Crystal Harris Urges Jessica Biel to Reconsider Hugh Hefner Film Role

Published 20:00 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1The film is also set to star Bill Pullman as HefnerWarning: This article contains discussion of rape which some readers may find distressing.Hugh Hefner's widow Crystal Harris is asking Jessica Biel to 'reconsider' her role in the new movie Playmates.Biel, 44, the wife of Justin Timberlake, is set to play a fictional wife of the late Hefner in the new movie. The character is said not to be specifically modelled on Hefner's three real-life wives.Following the news, Harris sent her a message detailing the alleged abuse she suffered.AdvertIn the DM, which was publicly shared to her Instagram profile, Harris, who was married to the Playboy founder between 2012 and 2017, penned: "Please reconsider playing Hugh Hefner’s ‘wife’ if this film intends to romanticize him or the Playboy world."Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Pullman, and Indiana Elle are also set to star in the movie, which follows a 13-year-old who considers the Playboy Mansion her second home, according to the synopsis."I was actually his wife, and I experienced sexual, emotional, financial and physical abuse in that relationship," Harris continued. She also added that many other women had come forward with allegations of rape, coercion, drugging and exploitation.“There are also deeply troubling concerns involving minors," she claimed.Biel is set to star in the new movie Playmates (Photo by Noam Galai/FilmMagic)Earlier this year, Harris demanded Hefner's foundation conduct an investigation, claiming they possess one of Hefner's scrapbooks which could contain explicit pictures of underage girls.Hefner's sons Cooper and Marston Hefner told Global News they and several others had reviewed the scrapbooks and 'never seen inappropriate images of minors, as has been suggested'."I hope everyone involved in this film takes the time to listen to the women who lived it," Harris concluded.UNILAD has contacted Jessica Biel's representatives for comment. In 2024, six years after Hefner's death, Harris released her memoir Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself. In the memoir, Harris alleged that Hefner made his girlfriends come to him each week to collect their 'allowance,' and had a number of strict rules on how they should look and dress.“Our nail polish couldn’t be anything but some neutral color, no French manicure."He would tell me ‘Wear the flag,'" she said. "That’s the Playboy logo and those shirts were uncomfortable and cheap.”She also claimed she 'burned her scalp' with bleach after Hefner continuously pointed out when her darker roots were showing.“But for some reason I thought this was all normal and that’s what it meant to be seen as beautiful in Hef’s eyes," she added. The former couple were married until Hefner's death (Charley Gallay/Getty Images for Playboy)The former couple, who briefly called off their wedding in June 2011, before reconciling a year later, stayed together until Hefner's death in 2017.The Playboy founder died at the age of 91 after suffering a cardiac arrest. His death certificate also listed respiratory failure, septicaemia and an antibiotic-resistant strain of an E. coli infection.According to Harris' book, Hefner's 'last words' were "I'm okay," as he received fluids via an IV drip.A Playboy spokesperson previously told UNILAD: "The Hefner family is no longer associated with Playboy, and today’s Playboy is not Hugh Hefner’s Playboy."Today, our organization is run by a workforce that is more than 80% female, and we will continue to confront any parts of our legacy that do not reflect our values today, and to build upon the progress we have made as we evolve as a company so we can drive positive change for our employees and our communities."Featured Image Credit: WireImageTopics: Hugh Hefner, Film and TV, Celebrity

Susan Dell’s Staggering Fortune Draws Attention After Awkward Trump Exchange

Susan Dell’s Staggering Fortune Draws Attention After Awkward Trump Exchange

Updated 18:36 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 17:56 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Despite donating more money toward American children than 99 percent of the global population will ever make, she was under fire from trollsWith so much buzz still lingering around Susan Dell donning a bright red dress while standing behind the President Donald Trump at the White House, we thought you might want to know just how much she is worth. The philanthropist caught the internet's attention alongside her husband Michael Dell on Wednesday (October 7), as the pair were invited inside the Oval Office to promote their $6.25 billion pledge to the expanded Trump Accounts program. The initiative provides a $250 contribution for up to 25 million eligible US children to jumpstart their personal investment portfolios, with the scheme also giving children born between 2025 and 2028 a $1,000 government seed deposit. The Dells' private donation will help kids born between 2016 and 2024 who are currently not included in the federal booster.AdvertMichael explained the pledge works out as a fraction of his net worth - which, if it were you and I, each child wouldn't end up with an awful lot... they'd probably all end up taking on our debts - but with him being the founder of Dell Technologies, it's an enormous donation.President Donald Trump invited Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell and his wife Susan Dell to the Oval Office this week (Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images)Michael launched Dell Technologies from his University of Texas dorm room in 1984 with an initial investment of just $1,000.Today, Forbes places him as the fourth richest man in the world with an estimated net worth of $280 billion.Meanwhile, Susan is an accomplished endurance athlete and former fashion entrepreneur who previously launched three separate clothing brands during her career. If you were to split Michael's fortune straight down the middle, Susan would be worth a staggering $140.05 billion on her own.In the Oval Office, Susan urged families to register and claim the money waiting in their child's account, stressing to the children they are helping via cameras in the room: "We believe in you, and we want you to dream big because we know you can make your dreams come true."Trump then joked: "Good job, is she thinking about running for office?"Philanthropists Susan and Michael Dell have donated more than $6 billion to the expanded Trump Accounts program (Rick Kern/Getty Images)Before adding: "I'll endorse her, she has my complete and total endorsement."Michael quickly shut down any suggestion that his wife was looking at getting into politics - it was all rather awkward! The couple established the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation in 1999, donating billions to programs supporting education, healthcare, and economic stability.Susan's collaboration with Trump isn't her first foray into politics. During George W. Bush's administration, she served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, which aimed to come up with idea to get Americans more invested in exercise.Speaking about their Trump Accounts donation, Michael wrote on X: "Promise made. Promise kept."By tomorrow, 25 million American children will have our gift of $250 in their accounts."$6.25 billion. Invested in kids. Compounding for decades."If you have a child under 18, claim their account and see how much is in there now. Why Keely Hodgkinson’s Catwoman-Like Catsuit Is Banned from the 2028 Olympics

Why Keely Hodgkinson’s Catwoman-Like Catsuit Is Banned from the 2028 Olympics

Published 15:50 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1The catsuit looks highly unusual, being backless and including a skintight hood with a hole for a ponytailKeely Hodgkinson's team have insisted that the distinctive catsuit she recently donned does have benefits after Hodgkinson was barred from wearing it at the Olympics in 2028.The unusual garment is skin tight, partially backless, and also has a wetsuit-style hood that goes over the athlete's head, which is described as a 'sleek speed hood' and even has a special hole cut out of it at the back for her ponytail. All in all it looks more like something you might expect to see in a 1970s science fiction film rather than on the competitive field in 2026.Nonetheless, it is claimed that the specially designed suit may just give her a competitive edge over rivals in the mid distance running, something which Hodgkinson's team have insisted after she was barred from wearing it at the Olympics, though for different reasons.AdvertSpeaking to Athletics Weekly her coach Jenny Meadows said that the garment helps Hodgkinson with her performance, saying that she had been able to run in it after suffering from an injury when she fell badly prior to the Prefontaine Classic, The Sun reports.Hodgkinson wearing the catsuit in the ATHLOS London 2026 (Kate Green/Athlos/Getty Images)“She could hardly walk because her knees were so swollen," said Meadows. "She was in a really, really bad way. And she was very tearful all day.“By the end of the day, she got on an anti-gravity treadmill at the Center and she put the speed suit on. She said it helped her to be able to move."She added: “Without the speed suit, she couldn’t bend and flex her knee because of the inflammation."Hodgkinson's coach went on to say that the athlete, who is the sixth-fastest woman in history, had told her that the suit had helped a lot.“She was literally like: ‘Guys in this speed suit, I can run’," said Meadows. "Keely gives genuine feedback and the speed suit helped her run that day.“She says it feels like she’s not wearing anything. She says: ‘Honestly, it feels just so light. I can flow'.”However, Hodgkinson will not be able to wear the 'Zero-Distraction Speed Suit' when she competes for Team GB in Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics, though not because of concerns around an unfair advantage, but due to conflicting sponsorship deals.Hodgkinson's coach said she thought the suit helped her performance (Kate Green/Athlos/Getty Images)The British Olympic Association has a sponsorship deal with Adidas, and the catwoman-like speed suit is made by Nike, a business competitor.Nonetheless, Meadows, who is herself a world championship silver medallist in the 800 metres, has said that the suit really does make a statement, and that her initial reaction when she first saw the suit was a little sceptical.“My initial reaction was like: ‘Oh, you’ve got to be brave to wear that'," she said, while her husband and fellow coach Trevor Painter had a different reaction. "Trevor was kind of like: ‘Yeah, you look Catwoman. Go for it. It’s so you'," she recalled."You’ve got to think: Is it faster or is it just a gimmick?" said Meadows. “You’ve actually got to walk out in front of an audience the first time and you’ve got to win in that thing. It’s a statement piece.”Featured Image Credit: Shaun Botterill/Getty ImagesTopics: UK News, Olympics, Sport

Why Treatment-Resistant Shigella Is Getting Doctors’ Attention Now

Why Treatment-Resistant Shigella Is Getting Doctors’ Attention Now

Updated 14:12 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 13:59 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Those with the infection should 'avoiding antidiarrheal medications,' an expert saysIt's not unusual to get a dodgy stomach every now and then. Many things could be to blame including contaminated food, water, or stress. However, diarrhoea can sometimes be caused by a sexually transmitted infection.Shigella is said to infect around 450,000 people in the United States every year. It can be spread through contaminated food and water, but also sexual contact."Shigella is the bacteria behind the emergence of sexually transmitted diarrhea being reported in both the US and UK," Dr. Andi Toufexis, a board-certified family medicine physician specializing in sexual health and the creator of Your Doctor Bestie, tells UNILAD.Some strains of Shigella transmitted through sexual contact have also developed resistance to antibiotics, making these infections more difficult to treat. How does Shigella spread?'The infection represents a serious public health concern,' doctors say (Getty Stock)AdvertAlthough it is 'not considered to be typical sexual transmitted infection,' Dr. Toufexis explains that 'gastrointestinal bacteria can be spread through sex when one partner comes into contact with the other's fecal matter.'In simpler terms, it spreads when someone swallows microscopic amounts of fecal material. During the act of sex, this can be spread 'through oral-anal contact, contaminated fingers, or shared toys.' Dr. Andi Toufexis explains.Although a new strain is on the rise, the infection is not new, as the expert explains it has been around since the 1970s.However, now 'certain strains of Shigella are becoming resistant to standard treatment regimens,' he explains.Although the doctor says 'the overall incidence of treatment-resistant sexually transmitted Shigella is low,' the infection represents a serious public health concern due to the fact that it is spreads easily and is becoming harder to treat. What are the symptoms of Shigella?According to the expert, people should look for: Diarrhea (which is sometimes bloody along with a fever)Abdominal crampingThe feeling of needing that you need to have a bowel movement even though your bowels are empty. The incubation period is relatively short, with symptoms starting one to two days after exposure. The illness usually lasts around five to seven days."Many infections resolve without antibiotics so lack of antibiotic treatment does not automatically mean complications will develop," the doctor adds. However, he does warn that in some cases, the illness can lead to 'complications of dehydration and, less commonly, a bloodstream infection.'"Rare toxin-producing strains can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, a rare but serious complication involving blood cells and the kidneys," he adds. Most people who acquire treatment-resistant Shigella recover with antibiotics, and the doctor says 'hydration is paramount.'He also recommends avoiding antidiarrheal medications while undergoing treatment. "I tell my patients that the diarrhea is the body's method of eliminating the infectious agent and slowing down the diarrheal process can prolong the length of illness," he says. Those with diarrhea should wait two weeks before having intercourse again (Getty Stock)How to prevent the spread of ShigellaTo help prevent the spread, the expert advises people to wash their hands, genitals, and the anal area with soap and water both before and after sex.Sex toys should also be cleaned after each use, and he recommends condoms and dental dams during sex. Those who are suffering from diarrhea should avoid intercourse for at least two weeks after it ends."Feeling better does not always mean that an infection is completely gone," he adds.Featured Image Credit: Getty StockTopics: Health

It is then invested in the stock market, giving it the chance to grow as the child gets older, although its value could also fall.AdvertWhen children turn 18, they can begin accessing the money under certain rules, giving them a financial head start in adult life.Earlier this week, Trump joked about endorsing Susan, 62, for office after she urged families to claim the $250 per child.(Win McNamee/Getty Images)“I’m very pleased to let you know today that we have funded 10 million of those accounts as of this morning,” Michael, 61, said on Wednesday.“By the end of this week we will have funded 25 million of those accounts.”“$250 is just the beginning,” he added. “If you have a child under 18 with a social security number you should claim your account.”Susan said: “Over the past month, as our contribution reached millions of children’ s accounts, Michael and I have heard from so many parents and kids and grandparents with these beautiful letters that have truly moved us.(Rick Kern/Getty Images)“Children have told us that they want to become entrepreneurs... nurses, doctors, engineers. They want to build their own companies some day.”“We’ve heard from parents and grandparents who share what it means to them,” she added.“To know that there is an investment in their child’s future. These things are so wonderful and so important. It’s not just the money that matters... Knowing someone believes in you and your future that matters just as much.”Taking to X on Thursday, Michael - who is worth a reported $281.7 billion - said: “Promise made. Promise kept.“By tomorrow, 25 million American children will have our gift of $250 in their accounts.”Responding to the tweet, one user wrote: “If I remember correctly I paid almost 5k in the mid to late 90s for the most sophisticated made to order Dell laptop.“Never, in my wildest dreams would I have thought that purchase would turn into an investment for my grandchildren 30 years later. Thank you @POTUS thank you @MichaelDell.”Another penned: “Thank you and your wife (and whole family). What great role models in philanthropy and marriage. Bravo.”While a third added: “Thank you. Amelia Earhart Mystery Reignites as Experts Investigate Object Beneath Pacific Lagoon

Amelia Earhart Mystery Reignites as Experts Investigate Object Beneath Pacific Lagoon

Published 01:46 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan vanished in July 1937 Researchers believe they have a chance to bring ‘closure’ to the decades-old mystery of the disappearance of Amelia Earhart.Aviation pioneer Earhart set numerous records across her lifetime, including becoming the first female aviator to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. In summer of 1937, Earhart, then 39, was embarking on another record-breaking attempt as the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world in her Lockheed Electra 10e. However, on 2 July 1937, tragedy struck as she and her navigator Fred Noonan suddenly lost contact with air traffic control somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. AdvertNeither Earhart nor Noonan have been heard from since and the plane they were flying in has never been recovered. Now, almost 90 years on, researchers from Purdue University have set off a new expedition - dubbed the Taraia Object expedition - to search the ocean floor and, hopefully, find the remains of the missing aircraft. Amelia Earhart vanished without a trace in July 1937 (Purdue University)The university has joined forces with the Archaeological Legacy Institute and is gearing up to send out a 17-person crew out to the remote island of Nikumaroro, in the Pacific nation of Kiribati. In an update shared this week, the team confirmed that the crew had safely arrived at Tarawa, Kiribati, and will be preparing to head off on a six-day voyage via boat to Nikumaroro, which is around halfway between Australia and Hawaii. Once they've arrived, the team plans to begin searching beneath the island’s lagoon, where they believe the remains of the missing Electra 10e could have ended up. Expedition member and Purdue alumna Sirisha Bandla said the new exploration could bring closure to the mystery at last. “Even today, given its sheer vastness, there’s something significant to flying over the Pacific Ocean,” she said.“As we finally arrived at our point of departure here in Tarawa, it struck home that we’d flown over a majority of the portion that Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan were attempting to traverse when they were lost. Now we hope to have a chance to bring closure to their story.” The team has previously said it has ‘very, very strong’ evidence that the fallen plane is in the lagoon. “We gathered up many more satellite images, did historical research, found other imagery that relates to it,” executive director of the Archaeological Legacy Institute Pettrigrew told CBS. “We’re going to go look and identify it and if we’re right, we’ll in fact identify the lost Electra. We could be wrong but I think the evidence is very, very strong that this is, in fact what it is.”And after being missing for nine decades, the crew understands just how significant a find it would be. “Finding Amelia Earhart’s Electra aircraft would be the discovery of a lifetime,” Pettigrew said in a statement. “Other evidence already collected by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery establishes an extremely persuasive, multifaceted case that the final destination for Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, was on Nikumaroro.“Confirming the plane wreckage there would be the smoking-gun proof.”What is the Taraia Object? The team is going to take a closer look at the Taraia Object (Purdue University) The team are heading out to take a closer look at a visual anomaly which appears in the lagoon and has been coined the ‘Taraia Object’. The shape was first spotted using satellite imagery in 2020, but experts say that the object can actually be seen in photos taken as far back as 1938. Of course, this points to it showing up not too long after Earhart’s disappearance. Alongside this, the mysterious shape is also said to resemble an aircraft fuselage and tail.Photos and videos will be taken first, before the longer process of underwater excavation begins, with the object set to be brought to the surface to come to conclusions.Featured Image Credit: GettyTopics: US News, Amelia Earhart, History

Netflix’s Below Hides a Chilling Truth About Newfoundland’s Real History

Netflix’s Below Hides a Chilling Truth About Newfoundland’s Real History

Published 01:40 9 Oct 2026 GMT+1Josh Hartnett faces the creature, but this story behind Below is what really happenedIf you’ve already binged Netflix’s new Newfoundland sea monster thriller Below, you may be looking at open water with a fresh sense of dread. The six-part series stars Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a stubborn fisherman trying to protect his family and his remote community from a creature in the water, while holding on to a vanishing way of life. Now audiences are left wondering – is any of it real? The monster isn’t – at least we hope not – but creator Jesse McKeown built the series on the place itself and its whispered folklore and documented history."I always knew I wanted to make something here in Newfoundland. Preferably something big. And something strange," McKeown told EW. Advert"Something that taps into the terrifying ruggedness and isolation of the place."Below is already streaming on Netflix (Courtesy of Netflix)The real history of the floating housesBelow opens with a family towing their house behind a boat. The scene echoes a real aspect of Newfoundland’s past - the government-led resettlement programmes, which ran from the 1950s to the 1970s. These were designed to encourage families to leave isolated communities for larger popular centres. Many of these frontier folk took their homes with them across the water."So many families now are directly affected by resettlement," McKeown told the Canadian Press. "If you spend any time there, or if you grew up there, that image of the house floating on the ocean is a key image."Resettlement schemes like this continue, with community-led relocation very much a part of life in the region. The series builds on this phenomenon, showing how Calvin’s town is in the process of voting on a cash offer to move.Seafarers have long shared stories of giant squid attacking shipping (Photo by: Florilegius/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)The creatureNetflix is keeping the creature’s precise identity a closely guarded secret, and the show leaves the mystery for marine researcher Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) to solve. Early reviews have speculated about the possibility of a giant squid haunting the waters – a creature long linked to legends of sea serpents living off the coast.Fishing was once a mainstay of Newfoundland, Canada (Photo by DeAgostini/Getty Images)The collapse of a way of lifeIn addition to potentially including local legends, the series also reflects the economic pressure on Newfoundland’s fishing communities. Commercial fishing, and more recently harvesting ice from icebergs, are the backbone of the town’s economy. This backdrop mirrors the real-life 1992 cod moratorium, which devastated communities. On July 2 that year, Canada banned cod fishing along the east coast after decades of overfishing had reduced northern cod stocks to about one percent of their peak.Nearly 30,000 people in Newfoundland and Labrador lost their jobs in what has been described as the largest mass layoff in Canadian history, effectively ending centuries of cod fishing tradition. So, while the monster itself may be made up, it is possible the creature symbolises the wider dangers facing seafaring communities – with the struggle portrayed by Hartnett’s character showing how some doggedly held on to their disappearing way of life against the odds.
