Bowel Cancer Warning Signs You Should Never Dismiss as IBS

Bowel Cancer Warning Signs You Should Never Dismiss as IBS

Published 09:28 16 Oct 2026 GMT+1Bowel cancer symptoms mistaken for IBS, including changes in bowel habits and unexplained weight lossDr Fong says you should start to become concerned when symptoms keep recurring Bright red blood that keeps returning, dark, tarry stools and unintentional weight loss are all symptoms that should not be written off as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).That is the advice of Dr. Carmen Fong, Chief Medical Officer of Bummed, who also named severe constipation and being unable to pass gas as a late sign of bowel cancer.Fong said bright red blood that 'doesn't stop after 2-4 days or is recurrent' is a red flag. "Most hemorrhoidal bleeding stops on its own in 3-4 days," she said."IBS is irritable bowel syndrome, which can come in constipation, diarrhea, or mixed type, and this is usually managed with diet, supplements, enzymes, and sometimes antispasmodic medication," Fong said.AdvertShe described inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, as usually managed with biologic medications, diet, enzymes and potentially surgery."Cancer doesn't go away," Fong said, explaining that symptoms which fluctuate are usually not a sign of it. Alternating between diarrhea and constipation, or having abdominal pain on some days and not others, fits that pattern."You can have slow onset of constipation and start only passing liquid stools-change in bowel habits or change in stool caliber is also a potential sign of cancer," Fong said.IBS can present as constipation, diarrhea or a mix of both, and is usually managed with diet, supplements, enzymes and sometimes antispasmodic medication. (Getty Stock Image)When should you see a doctor about bowel symptoms? Her advice comes down to what is normal for each person."If you have something that is outside of your normal, seek medical attention sooner rather than later," she said.On bright red blood, Fong said: "It can be recurrent but it should not be every single day for a month. Same with weight loss, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating, and change in stool habits and caliber.""Cancer usually presents as a constellation of all these symptoms when you really start looking into it," she added. When symptoms resemble IBS at first, Fong said, 'the only true method is colonoscopy, to see what's happening inside the bowel and find the tumor.'"Other things that can help are stool studies (for occult blood), some blood tests, but the true diagnosis has to be colonoscopy," Fong added.Dr. Carmen Fong says bright red blood that does not stop after two to four days, or keeps recurring, is a warning sign of bowel cancer. (Getty Stock Image)Polyps are abnormal growths in the colon or rectum that can turn into cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency, which uses the term colorectal cancer, says polyps and the disease do not always cause symptoms, so a person could have either without knowing it, which is why regular screening is important.Signs to look out for, the CDC says, include a change in bowel habits, blood in or on the stool, and diarrhea, constipation or a feeling that the bowel does not empty fully.Abdominal pain, aches or cramps that do not go away, weight loss with no known cause and low iron levels in the blood, known as anemia, are also listed. The CDC says these symptoms may be caused by something other than cancer, and the only way to know the cause is to see a doctor.Featured Image Credit: Getty Stock ImageTopics: Health, Cancer, Science

Why Retatrutide’s 129 Self-Reported Side Effects Are Raising Questions

Why Retatrutide’s 129 Self-Reported Side Effects Are Raising Questions

Published 19:58 15 Oct 2026 GMT+1Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Retatrutide, has addressed the matterPeople have reported a series of positive and negative side effects after taking Retatrutide, apparently affecting everything from their mood and heart rate to their alcohol use and dreams, a new study has found.Retatrutide, also known as 'Reta' and 'Godzilla', is an investigational, once-weekly injectable peptide developed by Eli Lilly.Early trials have indicated that the weight loss drug could have huge benefits when it comes to people shedding some pounds, with one study finding that it could reduce a person's body weight by 25 percent. What makes it different to medications like Wegovy and Ozempic is that Reta is a triple threat, as it mimics the hormones GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. These help control appetite, blood sugar and metabolism.AdvertWith early trials signalling some positive results, people have been trying to get their hands on Reta for some time. It's yet to be approved by any regulatory body globally, however.Despite this, people have still been able to access the drug through illegal 'gray markets'.Retatrutide is yet to be approved for humans to use (Getty Stock Image)New study looking into RetaThose who have taken Reta via this market have gone on to share some of their side effects on social media platforms like Reddit. A new study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open on October 14, saw researchers examine 148,640 social media posts related to Reta on Reddit. The posts came from 38,936 users across 27 retatrutide, peptide, and weight management communities from May 2021 to December 2025, the study said. They then whittled this down to 45,592 posts and comments from 13,589 unique users reporting Reta usage between the aforementioned dates.Of this figure, nearly 8,000 people said they had experienced at least one side effect. In total, there were 129 different side effects discussed online. Some were positive, while others were negative.Eli Lilly is the manufacturer of retatrutide, AKA 'Godzilla' (Getty Stock Image)Self-reported side effects of RetaOf those who had reported side effects, 43.4 percent had experienced 'general disorders and administration site conditions' like fatigue, increased energy, and inflammation, while 33 percent had metabolism and nutrition disorders such as increased appetite and dehydration.32.5 percent spoke about have having gastrointestinal problems like nausea and constipation, and a further 30.3 percent found it impacted them psychologically too. Insomnia was the highest reported psychiatric disorder (6.1 percent), and 3.8 percent had anxiety while taking Reta.Other symptoms included dizziness, decreased blood pressure, back pain, lethargy, skin sensitivity, and blurry vision. Both increased and decreased libido were reported, with 64 additional people saying their sex drive had decreased.Others reported abnormal dreams (one percent), alcoholism (0.8 percent) and waking up multiple times in the night to pee (0.7 percent).11.6 percent of Reta users reported that they'd experienced nausea (Getty Stock Image) The most common symptoms were increased appetite (17.1 percent), fatigue (15.2 percent), increased energy (12.4 percent), nausea (11.6 percent) and food cravings (7.3 percent). You can see the full list here. The researchers noted that the symptoms could be 'misattribution rather than causal drug effects', also noting: "Product identity, purity, dose, route, treatment duration, concomitant medications, and medical history cannot be verified."They also said that adverse side effects were likely to be reported at a higher rate on social media than as a percentage of clinical trial participants.Eli Lilly's responseA spokesperson for Eli Lilly told UNILAD: "Retatrutide is an investigational molecule that has not been approved by any regulator anywhere in the world."Regulators around the world, including MHRA, have warned patients about the dangers associated with unapproved drugs, including black-market retatrutide."Anyone purporting to sell retatrutide to consumers is breaking the law. We have referred hundreds of black-market retatrutide sellers to regulators and law enforcement and call on them, as well as the companies whose services enable black market sales, to take decisive action to fight this urgent threat to public health."Lilly will continue to take action against those who break the law and endanger the public."Featured Image Credit: Getty Stock ImageTopics: Weight loss, Drugs, News, Health, Reddit

Jake Lloyd sparks emotional reactions with rare message to Star Wars fans

Updated 20:43 15 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 11:27 15 Oct 2026 GMT+1Star Wars fans praise Young Anakin child actor after appearing in rare video thanking themJake Lloyd previously spoke out to say he was 'doing better' after spending 18 months in an inpatient facility following a psychotic breakJake Lloyd, the young actor who played Anakin in the first Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace, rarely appears in public, having pulled back from Hollywood shortly after the film was released following extreme bullying. The actor now though has been widely praised by Star Wars fans after filming a video with his fellow prequel child actor Daniel Logan, who played the young version of Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones before returning for multiple Star Wars projects. In the Instagram video, seen below, Logan says: “We want to send a special message to each and every one of our Star Wars fans and let you know, thank you so much.”AdvertLloyd backs this up, saying he ‘really appreciates’ the support he has been receiving, with Logan finally adding: “Thanks for the kind words, Jake loves you.”The former child actor received a lot of hate and vitriol at the time of The Phantom Menace both at school and in the press, despite being just ten years old, though he was thankfully shielded from much of the press. In a follow-up post, Logan touched on some of the hate he and Lloyd had previously experienced as child actors in Star Wars.He said they were subjected to 'bullying from adults name calling online and in person'He added: "I’m trying to bring Jake back to the SW universe only to get backlash."Because of Star Wars we are projected to hate and negativity for the rest of our lives they say it come with the territory but an 8 year old and 13 year old have no idea what that truly means."Jake Lloyd alongside Daniel Logan (Instagram/@instadaniellogan)However, over the years, the initial hate has largely turned into love and support for a young star, particularly amid a re-examination of the prequels that has developed a cult following. The newest video has led to an outpouring of love for the former actor after he and his family previously opened up about his mental health struggles. One popular comment which received 1,000s of likes said: “We the people love Jake Lloyd, hoping for nothing but the best for this young man.”Another comment said: “Wonderful to see you both! Love to you, Jake!”The turnaround in fan reaction is incredibly sweet when you consider Lloyd’s recent mental health troubles which his mum opened up about in a 2024 interview.Lloyd suffered a psychotic break and spent 18 months in inpatient care, but shared in 2025 that he was ‘doing well’ after treatmentJake Lloyd and George Lucas in 2005 at the Revenge of the Sith after-party (David Paul Morris/Getty Images)Lloyd’s mother Lisa Lloyd said in a 2024 interview that the former actor had been hospitalised in a mental health rehabilitation facility, but she was keen to stress that this was not related to the bullying and pressure he suffered during promotion for The Phantom Menace. She explained that their family has a history of mental illness and that schizophrenia was genetic, saying that ‘it would have happened anyways’ in an interview with Scripps News. She added, regarding rumours he quit acting due to the Phantom Menace backlash: “I protected him from the backlash. He was just riding his bike outside, playing with his friends. He didn’t know. He didn’t care.Lloyd and Logan earlier this year (Instagram)"Everybody makes such a big deal about that. And it’s rather annoying to me because Jake was a little kid when that came out, and he didn’t really feel all that stuff because I didn’t let him online.”In multiple interviews, Lloyd has stated that he is ‘not a big fan of cameras anymore’ after he was reportedly made to take part in 60 interviews a day during promotion for the film.Lloyd meanwhile shared in a 2025 interview with writer and Star Wars super-fan Clayton Sandell that he is doing well, stating that he is able to accept taking on ‘continued treatment, therapy, and meds’, and added: “Everyone’s been really supportive.”In a more recent update last month though, Sandell said he had caught up with Jake and his mum, explaining that he was 'doing better than ever', adding: "I’m really happy to share, however, that today Jake is doing better than I’ve ever seen him. He’s engaging, curious, and funny."We had a great conversation about video games and editing programs—two of his big interests."In June, he completed a long-term program that has done wonders for him—helping him stay on track with medication, therapy, and other life skills."Progress is measured in days sometimes, but along with his mom, who continues providing extraordinary and unwavering support, there are many reasons to be optimistic about Jake’s future."Featured Image Credit: 20th Century StudiosTopics: TV and Film, Film, Star Wars, Celebrity, Nostalgia

Donna Stone Faces Jurors as Disturbing Details Emerge in Granddaughter’s Death

Donna Stone Faces Jurors as Disturbing Details Emerge in Granddaughter’s Death

Main: Donna Stone in court for a pretrial hearing in September 2026 (WOWK). Inset: Kyneddi Miller (WCHS).The trial of a 78-year-old West Virginia grandmother accused of starving and neglecting her 14-year-old granddaughter to death began Wednesday, about two years after authorities found the teen "emaciated" and in a "skeletal state" inside the family's home, with authorities saying she had been dead for several days.Donna Stone is facing charges of murder by a parent, guardian or custodian by refusal or failure to provide necessities and child neglect resulting in death in connection with the death of Kyneddi Miller, court records show.Following opening statements in Boone County Circuit Court, prosecutors called Sheriff Chad Barker to testify as the state's first witness, Huntington, West Virginia-based NBC affiliate WSAZ reported. Less than an hour into his testimony, the sheriff relayed his recollection of what happened when he first entered the home where Kyneddi's body was found.Stone's trial had previously been scheduled for March 17 and July 21, but both dates were postponed. As Law&Crime previously reported, Julie Ann Miller, Stone's daughter and Kyneddi's mother, pleaded guilty in November 2025 to one count of death of a child caused by a parent, guardian or custodian. In February, Boone County Circuit Judge Stacy Nowicki-Eldridge sentenced her to 15 years to life in a state correctional facility. Miller could become eligible for parole after 15 years but would be required to serve an additional 50 years of supervised release.Stone's husband, Jerry Stone, was also charged in Kyneddi's death. However, a judge found him incompetent to stand trial in August 2025 and he was committed to a state mental hospital.During Miller's sentencing hearing, Nowicki-Eldridge excoriated the adults in Kyneddi's life for their failures to keep her safe and healthy."This child literally starved to death," she said. "No child should ever have to go through that."Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Holstein similarly said it was unimaginable to him how Miller could let her child wither away like that."As a father with my own children, and now grandchildren, I cannot imagine how someone gets to the point that you allow your child to get like that, so emaciated, and you don't even bother to get help," he said. "You just let them die."The case began when deputies with the Boone County Sheriff's Office and paramedics responded on April 17, 2024, to a call about a juvenile female in cardiac arrest at a home in the 400 block of Cameo Road in Morrisvale. Kyneddi lived in the home with her mother, grandmother and grandfather, Jerry Stone.Responders found Kyneddi lying motionless on a foam pad on a bathroom floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office said the child's appearance was "shocking," with "an obvious emaciated, skeletal state."Kyneddi reportedly weighed just 58 pounds when she died.In an interview with police investigators, Donna Stone reportedly confirmed that Kyneddi had not attended school for about four or five years. Authorities also noted that the grandmother said she believed Kyneddi had only left the Cameo Road home and gone outside twice in the past four years.Investigators said Miller began homeschooling her daughter in February 2021, supposedly for medical reasons. An email obtained by authorities reportedly showed that Miller told officials with the Boone County School District that, because they lived with Kyneddi's elderly grandparents, they were concerned about the child contracting COVID-19 and spreading it to Donna and Jerry Stone.Donna Stone allegedly told investigators that Kyneddi had an eating disorder and was not capable of functioning on her own for several days before her death. The grandmother also said she did not believe Kyneddi had seen a doctor in about four or five years.

Why Aurora Williams’ Alleged Eight-Hour Care Delay Is Under Scrutiny

Why Aurora Williams’ Alleged Eight-Hour Care Delay Is Under Scrutiny

Left: Gabrielle Hanson. Right: Jacob Randolph (San Jose Police Department). An 8-year-old California girl suffered through hours of medical distress during a fatal asthma attack before her mother and stepfather sought help, according to prosecutors.Gabrielle Hanson, 32, and Jacob Randolph, 39, have been charged with felony child endangerment in connection with the May death of Hanson's daughter, Aurora Williams. Her death was ruled a homicide after the medical examiner determined that medical neglect contributed to her fatal asthma attack, The Mercury News reports.A probable cause affidavit obtained by the local newspaper says "cockroaches and debris" were found in Aurora's respiratory mask and nebulizer equipment. The other two children living in the East San Jose home "had cockroaches stuck in their ears," and one child needed medical assistance to get one of them out, the affidavit says.Aurora was found unresponsive at the family's residence on May 13. She was rushed to a hospital and placed on life support, but died four days later after a severe asthma attack deprived her brain of oxygen, according to the medical examiner. Hanson and Randolph were arrested Monday. The affidavit says Aurora had been in medical distress for approximately eight hours before her family sought medical attention. Investigators also found troubling conditions inside the home, where Aurora lived with her mother, stepfather, siblings and other adult relatives. After Aurora was diagnosed with asthma in 2022, medical providers reportedly warned Hanson that the home's unsanitary conditions — including a cockroach infestation — could worsen the girl's condition."Despite prior warnings from social workers, repeated medical contacts, and their documented knowledge of the residence's condition, Ms. Hanson and Mr. Randolph continued to allow the children to live in the home without taking adequate steps to address the cockroach infestation and other unsafe and unsanitary living conditions," the affidavit states, according to The Mercury News. When investigators searched the residence after Aurora was taken to the hospital, they allegedly could not find her asthma inhaler.Court records reportedly describe earlier cockroach incidents involving the other children. Aurora had also been identified as underweight during a 2023 medical visit, when doctors determined she met "the criteria for failure to thrive," according to the affidavit. The family's home was reportedly the subject of 12 child welfare referrals since 2022. In at least eight referrals since 2023, social workers determined that allegations of abuse or neglect were unfounded or inconclusive.Hanson has disputed that her daughter's death resulted from neglect. In a September interview with The Mercury News, she said the incident was a medical emergency and defended the care she and Randolph provided that morning."If the house is to blame, then why don't my other kids have any problems like that?" Hanson said. "Losing a child and then losing my other ones to CPS are both of my worst fears come to light."Hanson claimed the family tried to administer asthma medication, including albuterol and a nebulizer treatment, but nothing appeared to work. She said she called 911 after Randolph brought Aurora into the bedroom and then had a hard time following the dispatcher's CPR instructions.Hanson and Randolph are facing two felony child endangerment counts related to Aurora's death and six misdemeanor child endangerment counts involving the other kids who lived in the home. The surviving children, ranging in age from an infant to a teenager, have been placed in foster care.Hanson and Randolph are due back in court Nov. 20.

White House Fires Back as Katie Zacharia’s Lawyer Claims Face Scrutiny

Updated 13:47 15 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 13:28 15 Oct 2026 GMT+1An expert has explained if she could have practiced law in China following her comments to journalistsThe White House has responded after a watchdog group filed a complaint asking the California State Bar to investigate Press Secretary Katie Zacharia's claims that she is a lawyer. The Campaign for Accountability, an ethics watchdog non-profit, submitted the complaint on Wednesday, according to Forbes.According to the complaint, Zacharia said she was a lawyer in at least 18 TV appearances between February 2025 and October 2026."The repetition and breadth of these statements weigh heavily in favor of investigation," it says.AdvertThey also noted Zacharia states on her LinkedIn that she was General Counsel for non-profit Fix California from January 2024 to March 2025, adding: "It is not publicly known what legal work, if any, Ms. Zacharia performed in her role as General Counsel."The complaint also cites California law, which treats holding yourself out as entitled to practice law without a license as a misdemeanour, the group asked the bar to refer Zacharia to prosecutors if it finds violation.Katie Zacharia has said she is a lawyer during 18 TV appearances (Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)White House spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement posted to X: "This group that filed the 'complaint' is a radical leftist-organization run by rabid numbskulls suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. Nobody takes them seriously, because they are deranged low lifes."Cheung told UNILAD in a statement: "Katie is a fabulous and wonderful addition to the team. She is uniquely qualified and whip smart to help inform the American people about all the great things President Trump and his Administration have been doing, and she will do an incredible job as Press Secretary."A spokesperson for Pepperdine University told Snopes: "Katie graduated with a JD [Juris Doctor, a law degree] from Caruso School of Law in 2011, and with a bachelor of arts in political science from Seaver College in 2007."The university explains on its website: "A Juris Doctor (JD) is the primary credential for those seeking to become practicing attorneys. JD programs also prepare graduates to pass the state bar exam, which is required to practice law."So graduating with a JD is not the same as passing a state bar exam.Snopes also said it has 'reviewed lawyer directories from the bar association and supreme courts of all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., and found no evidence she had passed the bar examination in any of them'.Asked on October 13 where she passed the bar exam, Zacharia appeared to say 'when I moved to China'.Katie Zacharia has said she has 'all the appropriate credentials' (Kent NISHIMURA / AFP via Getty Images)A White House official said she moved there with her husband after graduating and worked on international law, but did not say whether she has passed the bar."I practiced international transaction law, with all the appropriate credentials," Zacharia said later in a statement to AFP.Could Katie Zacharia have worked as a lawyer in China without a license?Zacharia's LinkedIn page says she was an associate on the International Practice Team at the Zhong Lun Law firm in Beijing from 2011 to 2013.Georgetown University law professor Mark Jia told USA TODAY that foreign nationals generally 'cannot qualify as Chinese lawyers'.He said it is possible she did legal work there without a license, as the current rules postdated her time in Beijing."Unless she was admitted as a lawyer somewhere, the fact that she was allowed to do legal work at a Chinese law firm does not independently make her a lawyer," he said.Meanwhile, University of Wisconsin-Madison law professor John Ohnesorge told Snopes: "There's no possibility that she passed the Chinese bar exam, ever."What she did in China was to work in an elite Chinese law firm on international business matters, and doing that kind of work does not really require being a member of a bar anywhere."Featured Image Credit: Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty ImagesTopics: Donald Trump, US News, Politics

Why NHS Guidance on ‘American Covid’ Is Getting Attention Now

Why NHS Guidance on ‘American Covid’ Is Getting Attention Now

Updated 12:53 15 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 10:36 15 Oct 2026 GMT+1Cases of the variant have surged between August and September as we move into winterThe NHS has issued guidance on how people can protect themselves from 'American Covid', as cases of the virus are on the rise with winter fast approaching.Figures from the UK Health Security Agency have shown that there were 4,589 reported cases of the Covid strain in September, a significant increase of 230 percent from the 1,374 reported cases in August. The name 'American Covid' refers to the XFG Covid variants, with the UKHSA explaining that the condition was named for the place where it was first detected and then sequenced, not necessarily where it originated. This big increase in cases was also reflected in a rise in the number of hospital admissions for Covid here in the UK, which rose by 420 percent over the same period, from 950 to 4,939, with over half of the positive cases being linked to the XFG variant.AdvertIn a blog post, the UKHSA has now issued a warning about the condition, advising people who show symptoms of it to stay away from people who are immunocompromised and to self-isolate.Cases are on the rise as the days are getting colder (Getty Stock Image)"If you have symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as Covid-19, and you have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to go to work or carry out normal activities, you should avoid contact with vulnerable people and stay at home if possible," the UKHSA advises. The typical symptoms of Covid to watch out forHigh temperature – you may feel hot, cold or shivery, or your skin is hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)A new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hoursLoss or change to your sense of smell or tasteShortness of breathFeeling tired or exhaustedAching bodyHeadacheSore throatBlocked or runny noseLoss of appetiteDiarrhoeaFeeling sick or being sickIt's been advised to stay at home if you experience symptoms (Getty Stock Image)There are also concerns that the actual figures of infections are higher, as these do not account for people experiencing milder symptoms, who can also spread the virus to people who may be vulnerable to having more serious symptoms.Nonetheless, while there is a spike in cases as we move into the colder months of the year, the UKHSA said that cases are still far below their highest point back in January 2021.At this time there were over 20,000 people in hospital, according to the UKHSA.NHS guidance on what to do if you have symptoms or test positiveThe NHS has advised that people who believe that they have covid should self-isolate for three to five days, avoiding contact with other people, while for people under 18 this is three days.If someone has a positive covid test then they should avoid contact with people who are immunocompromised for a period of at least 10 days.People have been advised to avoid contact with immunocompromised people if they test positive (Getty Stock Image)The current rise in cases has come as health bosses in the UK have advised people to start getting both flu and Covid as we start to move into winter, when we typically start to see a rise in cases each year.Symptoms of the condition have also been shared in an effort to help people spot if they may have picked it up.If you have the XFG strain of covid then you may find that you feel excessively tired or exhausted, because the condition impacts your upper airway.Other symptoms can include hoarseness, a fever, a cough, and a sore throat, which are also symptoms which match the Omicron variant of Covid. Most of the time if you show symptoms you do not need to take a lateral flow test, the NHS has said, though it has warned about avoiding contact with people who are immunocompromised, such as the elderly, small children, and people with a disability or medical condition which makes them vulnerable to respiratory conditions.Featured Image Credit: Adobe StockTopics: UK News, Coronavirus, Health, NHS
